New 32nm SoC dramatically boosts iPad 2′s battery life by over 2 hours

The iPad 2′s new 32nm CPU allows for 30% longer battery life

When Apple revealed ts third-gen iPad back in March, the technology giant also announced that the iPad 2 would drop to just 9. Along with the price drop, Apple apparently also added a new CPU which dramatically boosts the iPad 2′s battery life by over 2 hours, according to a new report by AnandTech.

AnandTech claims that Apple decided to add a 32 nanometer SoC in place of the the 45 nanometer SoC the iPad 2 launched with. Overall, performance remained the same, but battery life increased about 30% overall – a massive jump.

So, does your iPad 2 feature the new 32nm SoC? Unfortunately, there is no real way to tell without opening the box and running a benchmark test. The external packaging and the slate itself look identical to last year’s model.

As AnandTech points out, the 32nm iPad 2 is quite difficult to find, with Apple still selling leftover stock of the 45nm iPad. Of course, availability may improve over time, but for now, if you’re in the market for an iPad 2 you might be out of luck.

Of course, this is probably just the beginning of smaller transistors in mobile. I fully expect the iPhone 4S and and other competitor to offer CPUs with smaller, 32nm transistors throughout 2012.
